THOSE WHO ARE IGNORANT OF GOD’S GRACE ARE SEEKING TO ESTABLISH THEIR OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS THROUGH THEIR OBEDIENCE TO THE LAW. THE APOSTLE PAUL SAID THE SAME THING CONCERNING HIS COUNTRYMEN DURING HIS TIME. (Rom 10:2-4) “For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.”

YOU SEE, GOD FOUND FAULT WITH THE FIRST COVENANT (LAW) AND PROMISED TO MADE A NEW COVENANT (GRACE). BECAUSE THE PEOPLE CANNOT COMPLY WITH THE DEMANDS OF GOD’S LAW SO HE PROMISED TO MAKE A NEW ONE.
(Heb 8:7) “For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. But God found fault with the people and said: “The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.”

PEOPLE CAN ONLY GO SO FAR AS AN OUTSIDE OBSERVANCE OF THE LAW BUT IN REALITY, THE LAW DEMANDS AN INSIDE OBSERVANCE AS WELL.
(Mat 5:27) “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

FOR THIS REASON, CHRIST CAME AND MEDIATED A NEW COVENANT FOUNDED ON BETTER PROMISES. THE NEW COVENANT IS A COVENANT OF GRACE. NOTE: GRACE MEANS UNMERITED FAVOR; YOU CANNOT EARN IT, WORK FOR IT OR DESERVE IT.
(Heb 8:6) “But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.”

UNDER THIS COVENANT SALVATION IS BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH.
(Eph 2:8-9) “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”

UNDER THIS COVENANT WE ARE CALLED TO WALK BY FAITH.
(2Cor 5:7) “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
