UNDER THE OLD COVENANT OF THE LAW, GOD BY NO MEANS WILL CLEAR THE GUILTY, VISITING THE INIQUITY OF THE FATHERS UPON THE CHILDREN AND THE CHILDREN’S CHILDREN TO THE THIRD AND THE FOURTH GENERATION.
(Exo 34:5-8) “Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin; by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”
UNDER THE NEW COVENANT OF GRACE THAT CHRIST MEDIATED WITH THE FATHER, GOD SAID, “I WILL BE MERCIFUL TO THEIR UNRIGHTEOUSNESS, AND THEIR SINS AND THEIR INIQUITIES I WILL REMEMBER NO MORE.”
(Heb 8:7-9) For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. But God found fault with the people and said:
“The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord.
(Heb 8:12) “For I will be MERCIFUL TO THEIR UNRIGHTEOUSNESS, AND THEIR SINS AND THEIR INIQUITIES I WILL REMEMBER NO MORE.”
(Heb 8:13) “In that He says, “A NEW COVENANT,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.”
BECAUSE CHRIST FULLY SATISFIED ALL THE RIGHTEOUS REQUIREMENTS OF THE LAW IN US (ROM 8:3-5), IN CHRIST, GOD IS NOT COUNTING SINS AGAINST US UNDER THE NEW COVENANT.
(2Cor 5:19a) “That God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them.”
AND FOR THIS REASON, SIN IS POWERLESS OVER US IN CHRIST.
(Rom 6:14) “For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.”
UNDER GRACE, WE ARE NO LONGER SIN-CONSCIOUS, BUT CHRIST-CONSCIOUS.
(Heb 3:1) “Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess.”
ALTHOUGH WE ARE NOT UNDER LAW, BUT UNDER GRACE, WE ARE ADMONISHED TO FIX OUR EYES ON JESUS, THE AUTHOR AND PERFECTER OF OUR FAITH.
(Heb 12:2) Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
